What Do You Want to Do For The Rest of Your Life?

Hey, welcome back to your Daily Mindfulness. So recently I saw a quote on Instagram and it said, "What do you want to do every day for the rest of your life? Do that." Now it was part of a personal development page. And I appreciate the perspective that this is coming from. It's about being connected to your passion, what you care about. And there's some value to using it as a guided, guiding question to explore what you might want to commit to more deeply.

But my response to that question is how could you possibly know what you want to do every day for the rest of your life? I hardly know what I want to eat for lunch today, let alone what I want to commit to for the rest of my life. And maybe I'm being too critical of this quote, but I think questions like this put a tremendous amount of pressure on us to have it all figured out and to know our life path. And even if the question is coming from a pure place and it's meant to get you in touch with what you love, I just think it's too big and it can easily be overwhelming, leading us to, to talk ourselves out of trying new things that maybe we're interested in, but fearful of committing our entire life to. So I don't believe you need to know what you're going to do the rest of your life. I don't believe you even need to know what you'll do the next five years.

All you can do is try a bunch of things out and make the best decision at this point in time about what feels right to you right now. Passion for things, life, it grows over time. It grows from our interests. And you always have a right to change your passion and the path you want to take. So my alternative question for you, if you're struggling with this, if you're trying to figure out what should I do.

Instead of what am I going to do for the rest of my life? Maybe ask, what do I feel inspired to explore more deeply at this point in my life? Use mindfulness to connect to that, to feel that more deeply. And then trust, the first step you need to take in that direction. See how it unfolds. Maybe it's something you'll do for the rest of your life. Maybe it's something you'll do for a week and try something new.

You always have the right to change. I'll talk to you in the meditation. Thank you for your practice and take care.
