Hi, welcome back to your Daily Mindfulness. In today's session, we're going to talk about the importance of self care and putting yourself first. I think many of us are familiar with the oxygen mask metaphor. The idea that we need to put our oxygen mask on first, before putting it on somebody else. And what this is essentially pointing to is that we need to take care of ourselves before we can take care of another person.
Now I want to dive into that because I think sometimes we hear that and go, yeah. Nice idea, but for me, I sacrifice myself. I put other people's needs first and I don't need to tend to myself. And I want to say that that is not going to be a good long-term strategy for your wellbeing and for the wellbeing of others. The reality is you're a human being.
You have psychological needs, you have emotional needs and you have physiological needs. And if you're not tending to those over time, I ironically, you will become more self-oriented because your mind and body will go into a protective gear. They'll start consciously or subconsciously making sure you're taking care of yourself because you can only go so long without doing so. So even though you have this great positive intention to help other people, if you're not replenishing yourself, you won't have anything to give and slowly your attention will go inward. When we do take care of ourself, when we are attuned to our needs and we're meeting those needs we're replenished, and we have this free energy to offer other people.
The point being, you can't fully take care of another person unless you're fully taking care of yourself. So I hope you can prioritize self care in your life. And although it might seem selfish, it's important to put yourself first. It's the only way to be able to continue to take care of other people. Thank you for your practice.

Hi, welcome back to your Daily Mindfulness. In today's session, we're going to talk about the importance of self care and putting yourself first. I think many of us are familiar with the oxygen mask metaphor. The idea that we need to put our oxygen mask on first, before putting it on somebody else. And what this is essentially pointing to is that we need to take care of ourselves before we can take care of another person.
