Presence Is Not Something To Do

Personalized support for learning how to integrate mindfulness into your life. Delivered fresh everyday by our world renowned experts. Choose meditation duration:

Hi, welcome back to your Daily Mindfulness. In today's session, we're going to talk about a new way of accessing presence. So I'll start with a statement. Presence is not something you do. It's something you remember.

Presence is not something you do. It's something you remember. So notice what comes up for you when you hear that. The interesting thing about mindfulness is that it's a word translated from another word in the Pali language. And that word is, Sati.

S A T I. But the direct translation of Sati is not mindfulness or presence. It's actually to remember, to remember. And it's this remembering of where we are right now, of who we are, of the part of us that is not our thoughts, our stories, our conditioning, the part of us that is inherently whole and complete, that's what were remembering. I think in the context of presence, especially these days as mindfulness, meditation all becomes mainstream, it can feel like, well, I have to be present.

It's another thing I need to do. Another thing I need to cross off my to-do list. I need to get right. I need to perfect. All of that.

Right.? And at least for me that I just, I feel my system gripping around that, embracing around that. And it feels antithetical to my, my interest in this practice in the first place. And so what if it weren't something you had to do, but just something that you had to remember? For me, there's a softening into it. There's a reconnecting to something that's already here, not something that I need to generate. I can relax into the experience of presence rather than trying to create it or get somewhere where I'll find it.

So I just invite you to reframe that for yourself in your day today, and maybe for the rest of your life. Perhaps presence, isn't something you need to do, but rather something you remember. Thank you for your practice. Let's settle in for today's meditation.
