Hi, welcome back to your Daily Mindfulness. In today's session, we're going to explore looking for moments of completeness. So on some level, we're all looking for moments of feeling complete, feeling whole, feeling resolved, feeling ease. It's often one of the joys of working through problems is that on the other side of it, we get to experience this release of figuring something out and it's like, oh yeah, I got it. In fact, we can easily get caught up in an addiction to problems or drama because we really like the feeling of that release that emerges on the other side of tension.
Tension, release. Tension release. In meditation, you have the opportunity to watch the flow of all of this without being attached to it and swept around by it, all these cycles of like the tension of a thought, the tension of emotion, we're just watching that move through us. And while we're in that process in meditation, we can often attune ourselves to these moments of, oh, there's actually no drama here right now. I'm not on a cycle of tension and release.
It's just a period of ease. And similarly, we have that throughout the day. There are many moments throughout the day where we do feel ease, something has resolved. There was an issue, a tension and then there's a resolution and a feeling of, oh, okay. I'm okay in this moment.
Those moments though, we tend to push ourselves out of quickly. The mind goes to, okay, what's next. In some sense, it's an addiction to drama. And I don't mean, oh, I really like watching reality TV. I mean that it's, it's inherent to the human condition that this mechanism that binds us to these cycles of suffering of like, okay, what's next? What's another problem to solve? And contemplative practice always has aimed to, to have an honest look at these tendencies and conditionings.
So one thing that we can just play around with is when there are these moments of, oh, I don't need anything right now, there's a sense of okayness, notice how quickly the system wants to jump out of it or into the next thing. How quickly it may want to create another problem, something else that it can fix, something it can wrestle with. It's going to be subtle, but it will be significant and it can creep up on you. And it doesn't mean that you don't do anything. You're just practicing taking some space to dwell in those feelings of completeness.
Completeness is not contingent upon non-doing. It's more indicative of the relationship you're holding to any moment of your life. Can I do this with a deep sense of okayness? But the first step is to just pay attention to when those moments are available to you. And instead of quickly going into the chaos of another problem, something else to wrestle with, see if you can linger there, feel that, allow yourself to take it in like, oh, I'm okay right now. And train your nervous system to hold the frequency of okayness rather than what it might typically be used to, which is chaos, unpredictability, jumping to the next thing.
So ironically, it can actually take some training to appreciate a moment that is good and resolved and okay. And when you notice them, give yourself the opportunity to relax into it. That's how we retrain our nervous system in this way. Thank you for your practice. Let's settle in for today's meditation.
