Hi, and welcome to your daily mindfulness. In today's session we're going to talk about honest communication. I'd like to start by sharing a common saying around communication that most of us grew up hearing. If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all. I'm sure you've heard that once or twice.
Well, I think we can all appreciate the sentiment of this and the good place it's coming from. I do have some issues with it because as a sole strategy, I believe it's a recipe for emotional suppression, poor communication skills, and projecting unintegrated anger onto others and the rest of the world. While there is value in assessing the intention of your speech, the simplicity of this platitude encourages us to mask aspects of our emotional experience, especially the ones that might not be perceived as nice. And to also not trust the wisdom of negative emotions. The reality is relationships and communication are messy.
And connection, understanding and intimacy happen by staying present through the mess, not by trying to bypass it or cover it up with something you don't actually feel. You may feel like you're in smoother waters when both people are playing nice, but over time, resentment will build, disconnection from your truth will increase and the aliveness of your connection with another person will wane. A strong relationship, committed to growth and actualization is one that honors the many dimensions of being human and recognizes the need for these dimensions to be seen and respected by the other. So, yes, in general, it can be really powerful to lead your communication from a place of kindness and compassion. And sometimes the expression of truth in that moment might not be perceived as nice by you or the other person.
If you can express that truth from a place of commitment to connection and understanding, then it can be equally if not more powerful than simply speaking something that is nice. Thank you for your practice and let's settle in for today's meditation.
