Energetic Discharge

Hi, welcome back to your Daily Mindfulness. In today's session, I want to talk about the importance of energetic release. So in being in a physical body means that we are taking in a lot of stimulation day to day. A lot of input from other people, the media, social media. There's a lot that this mind and this body are processing and it doesn't always get the chance to be released.

But as human beings, it is important that we have ways of letting some of this energy move through us. There's a story I wrote about in my book, Stop Missing Your Life, about how this time when I was a kid where I saw this bird hit into a clear window. And it hit the window and fell to the ground. And out of my curiosity and fear, I went up to it and, I, I thought it had died, but after about 10 seconds, it did this really interesting thing where it jumped up on its two feet after being still for awhile, and it started vibrating and shaking. And then it was still for another five seconds.

It shook again. Was still, shook one more time and then it flew off. And this was, this is a natural thing that animals do in response to trauma. It's their form of discharging that trauma energy that is moving, moving through them. As humans, we tend to be less good at this.

We have a lot of different ideas of what we should do or shouldn't be doing, or what's appropriate to do, or what's not appropriate to do. But I'm sure you've experienced these moments where it's like, there's a lot moving through you and the main thing that, you know, you just want to yell or scream or shake. This is normal. It's not bad. As, as a human, as an animal, this is a way that we release things that are stuck in our system, that we release some of the excess trauma, overwhelm that just comes from being a human in the world.

Stillness can be useful for that. Stillness can provide a steady, a steady foundation to experience what's moving through us so it can move and pass. So it doesn't always have to be that movement is the only way to discharge. It's why meditation can be really powerful. But I want to offer permission to you if you're finding that one of the ways this energy is moving through you is that like, it actually wants to move, maybe through dance, but maybe like going out in an open field and yelling and shaking and letting, you know, anger, sometimes just be expressed to the point where it cracks you open into grief, and then that can be released and experienced and integrated and come to some form of completion.

That is a powerful practice of letting all the experiences that we accumulate as humans move through us and, and not get stuck. So it's not bad. There's a lot of emphasis on stillness when it comes to meditation. That's just because of the standard meditation practice tends to be done in stillness, and there's so much value to it. And there's a lot of value in movement and all these other ways that we express ourselves and shake things out.

So if you're feeling like that is coming through you, I hope you don't take the perspective that this is bad and I should just be still with it. Let your practice transform and let yourself follow that thread, that energy and see where it takes you. Chances are there's some release and integration on the other side of it. So thank you for your practice. Let's settle in for today's meditation.
