Dwell on Your “Cans”

Personalized support for learning how to integrate mindfulness into your life. Delivered fresh everyday by our world renowned experts. Choose meditation duration:

Hey, welcome back to your Daily Mindfulness. In today's session, we're going to talk about how to shift your can'ts to cans. What does that mean? Well, we all have a role list of the things we can't do. I'm not good at this. I couldn't possibly do that.

You know, we have this negativity bias within our brain that causes us to focus more on the negative. And that's not just negative scenarios, but even the negative parts within ourselves. You know, we could have so many good things about who we are, but there's one thing that comes up and that seems to be the thing that we dwell on. We latch onto it. Does that sound familiar? So when we're running that cycle of can't do this, can't do that, when we're dwelling on our can'ts, how's it feel? It usually creates more anxiety, more sadness, more frustration, or just a general sense that, that our plot in life is no good .But there's a different thing we can dwell on.

We can dwell on our cans. So what can we do? What are we good at? Where are we successful? What are our strengths? I'd like to walk through just a very short practice of us tuning into that for a moment. So I invite you to close your eyes, if that's comfortable. I'll take a deep breath. And just notice how your mind might be able to go into a dwelling on your can'ts, all of the things you can't do.

I'll give you about five seconds to think about that. Just notice how that feels in the body and in the mind. Now I want you to spend some time really ruminating, really dwelling on all the things you can do. What can you do. Maybe starting with just a simple fact that you can breathe right now.

The fact that you can think and imagine. And just see what else comes up if you were to really ruminate and dwell on your cans. Okay. You can open your eyes. Sorry to cut you a little short.

I know that one could be more fun. It can also be sometimes tough if we're very used to dwelling on our can'ts. But to change that ruminative cycle, we can be aware of when that's happening and see, can we shift the narrative. What can I do? I can do this. I can do that.

And you could start that narrative in that way. I can, I can, I can, and see what comes up. Chances are you're going to feel a lot better. You're going to be more connected to your strengths, what you like about yourself and what you feel like you can offer the world. That's a much better orientation than all of the thoughts of what you can't do.

And usually that is the thing leading to all of this extra anxiety, frustration, and depression. So instead of dwelling on your can'ts, dwell on your cans. I'll talk to you in the meditation. Thanks for your practice and take care.
