Hi, welcome back to your Daily Mindfulness. In today's session, we're going to talk about the importance of boundaries on our journey to becoming more present. I think for many of us putting up boundaries can be difficult, especially when we start getting into mindfulness and meditation. There can be this feeling that now that we're mindful, we should be more open and accepting or that we don't get mad or that we say yes to everything. Then that's just not true.
Mindfulness is being able to navigate, attune ourselves to and respect our inner compass. And that inner compass has a sense of when something feels like a yes and when something feels like a no. And being able to know when there is a no and listen to that no so we could step out of the experience, allows us to be more deeply in the experiences that we are in. I sometimes like to think of it as being dropped into the middle of the Atlantic Ocean versus being dropped into the shallow end of a pool. They both might be very cold bodies of water, but if you're in the Atlantic Ocean without any land nearby, no boundaries, it's going to be very intense for the nervous system and there's going to be a sense of freaking out and a lot of fear.
But if we're dropped into the shallow end of a pool might be the same temperature, might be cold, might be uncomfortable. But knowing that we can step out of the experience allows us to feel less fear while we're in the experience. So as you continue to navigate your day and your life, notice what your relationship to putting up boundaries is. This might be something you need to practice, but at the very least, I hope this session gives you permission to put up boundaries on your journey toward presence. Thank you for your practice.
