Hi, and welcome to your Daily Mindfulness. Today I'm going to talk about moving beyond the thinking mind. So when it comes to practicing mindfulness, at some stage, we really have to be willing to totally let go of our attachment to thoughts. And that means letting go of our attachment to our opinions, our concepts, our viewpoints, our judgements, and even to some of our most deeply held beliefs. Now, this doesn't mean that we're just discarding our beliefs.
We're not throwing them away, but we're simply learning to move beyond the thinking mind, the conceptual mind so we can enter into awareness itself, this non-conceptual way of knowing and being. So this process of letting go to clinging to thoughts can be quite a challenge sometimes as anyone that's been doing this practice for a while will know, because we may have beliefs that we've held for a very long time and opinions that we feel really strongly about. We might have ideas that govern the way we live and judgments and viewpoints that give us a sense of identity. They really may give us a sense of certainty and security so we want to hang on to them. But the hanging on also comes at a cost as we can become very rigid and fixed in our mental positions and locked into conditioned patterns of thinking and behavior.
But when we learn to let go of our attachment to opinions and beliefs, especially the really strongly held ones, we experienced more freedom and peace in the mind. We also open up a space to experience ourselves in our lives more fully. and more directly. So this week's invitation is to see if you can soften your attachment to thinking and be willing to go beyond the thinking mind. Just having the confidence that when you take a step back from thinking, you create some inner space and in that space, wisdom, calm and self-awareness emerge.
As Alan Alda says, "You have to leave the city of your comfort and go into the wilderness of your awareness. And what you'll discover will be wonderful. What you'll discover will be yourself." So as always thank you for your practice and your presence here with us and inviting you now to begin to settle in for today's meditation.
