Hi, welcome back to your Daily Mindfulness. In today's session, I'm going to talk about the relationship between mindfulness and happiness. I'd like to share a quote with you by Dr. Scott Barry Kaufman, that I think speaks to this relationship really well. He says, "Mindfulness meditation is a matter of rewiring your brain so that instead of primarily being rewarded by the possibility of reward, you are intrinsically rewarded by all of the beauty that already exists at any given moment, right in front of your eyes or in your rich imagination." So notice what it's like to hear that one part that I really love in that explanation is this idea of not being primarily rewarded by the possibility of reward.
I'm curious if that resonates for you too. I know this sense of chasing something, of the possibility of maybe getting there one day or having that thing, as compelling as it is, and as fun as it can sometimes be, can also be a tense ride. And it can also cause us to miss a lot of them moments of our life, because we're so focused on getting someplace else. And so he says, instead of that, you are training yourself to be intrinsically rewarded by all of the beauty that already exists at any given moment, right in front of your eyes. And he says in your rich imagination, which I like as well, cause sometimes imagination doesn't get included into the mindfulness space.
But imagination is something that we can experience in the present moment. And it's something that we can experience a lot of joy and richness from. So the key point here is that, the happiness that comes from mindfulness is not so much about getting what you want or chasing what you want. It's about learning to appreciate all of the different dimensions of who you are and what's here in this moment. That leads to a rich life, a full life and a whole life.
So see if you can keep this in mind as you go about your day and potentially the rest of your life. I'll talk to you more in the meditation soon. Thank you for your practice and take care.
