Hi, and welcome to your Daily Mindfulness. Today we're going to be exploring how to honor our own individuality and find our own unique path in life. Now, we all share a common challenge. We humans evolved over the last 200,000 years as tribal creatures. So the way our minds evolved means we're always going to feel a strong pool to fit in and be part of the pack.
We feel drawn, therefore, to conform rather than risk rejection. So our minds evolved that way to help us survive. But this internal pressure to conform means we'll sometimes deny our own feelings and desires instead of listening to them and trusting them. And our social conditioning combined with all the expectations of our peers, parents and partners can really kind of shape our approach to life. The world around us says we need to follow a certain path and way of living in thinking, you know.
We see marketing images of how we should look, how we should act and what we should have. And society in general has these expectations of normality. Like we need to hit certain milestones by specific ages, right? You go to school, go to college, have a career, and then you buy a house and you settle down, you have kids and then you retire. So then we have all these expectations, right, on how we're supposed to behave, or we're supposed to believe, how we're even supposed to speak and dress. So one of the gifts of mindfulness is that it helps us really get in touch with ourselves and our own individuality.
And the more we meditate, the more we discover who we truly are. Instead of living in reaction to the expectations of those around us, we're more able to listen to and honor that authentic voice deep within. It helps us to act from our own integrity and authenticity and find our own unique path through life. So with every meditation, you know yourself a little more deeply, and then you can be yourself a little more fully. So I invite you to make a pact with yourself today to honor your own individuality and authenticity, even if it's tricky to do so.
And we'll be strengthening this capacity more in today's meditation. So I invite you now to settle in for that. And as always thank you for your practice and for your presence here with us.
