Hi, welcome back to your Daily Mindfulness. In today's session, I want to talk about the complicated and triggering topic of money. It's an interesting topic within a lot of the mindfulness meditation and what you could call "spiritual" contemplative communities. There's something about money that is a hot topic. I mean, this is true across domains, but especially when you start getting into the space of personal growth and cultivating qualities of heart and mind that feel like more evolved aspects of ourselves.
People get really touchy around money to either not part of the conversation at all, or they're just big barriers and opinions around making money. And a lot of it tends to be grounded more than anything in fear. And so I want to share what could be perceived as a provocative statement. But having fear around making money is not some form of spiritual maturity. I think it's really just another block to our full, receptive expression in the world.
The reason this can be a little complicated is because we can certainly develop a relationship to money that is problematic and gets caught up in domination, and can be hurtful to others and can really fuel aspects of greed within us that are absolutely problematic. But if we're just going to focus on this thread of fear around money, well, that often has to do more with a general fear around receiving and feeling worthy and feeling like we can have enough and maybe more than enough, we can have a life that we desire that we're excited about. That may be, it doesn't have to be a zero sum game. And what often seems to happen, especially for people in this kind of work, is that we can mistake a scarcity mindset for nobility. We mistake a scarcity mindset for nobility.
And the thing I'll invite you to explore in your own life is, you know, you could look at this in relationship to money, but just look at anything that you might have fear around. That it seems like, oh, I'm, I'm being noble because I don't want this or I don't want too much of this. And ask yourself honestly, is this a form of virtue, of maturity? Or is it that I'm just fearful of receiving something, of having something, of actually holding the resonance of enoughness in my being? And Hey, let's take it a step further, not just enoughness, but let's just say abundance. What does that actually feel like in your mind, in your body? What comes up for you in relationship to that? That's a personal thing that we have to explore. But I'll say it again.
I don't believe having fear around making money is a form of maturity. I think it's often instead an internal block that we have to receiving. So something for you to ponder on your mindfulness and potentially spiritual journey. Thank you for your practice. Let's settle in for today's meditation.
