Hi, welcome back to your Daily Mindfulness. In today's session, we're going to talk about distractions. Now these days with all of the various stimuli we have coming our way, we're so distracted by our distractions that we don't even know we're distracted. I'm sure you've had this experience, especially in your meditation practice. It's not so much that it's difficult to focus on something.
It's more that it's difficult to recognize when we're not focused on that thing. The mind has wandered off and is distracted by something, but we're so distracted by what we're distracted by that we don't even know we're distracted. So I reckon we could view this as the very definition of living on automatic pilot. Most of us don't realize where on autopilot, because inherent to that experience is a lack of awareness. And one of the early gifts of mindfulness is it, it shows us just how unmindful we usually are.
It's perhaps a painful discovery, but it's the only doorway into a more intentional conscious way of living. And so my invitation to you for both your meditation practice and for your day-to-day life is to really celebrate those moments of recognition of when you've been on autopilot, when you have been distracted by your distractions. And instead of those being opportunities for beating yourself up, getting caught up in judgment, thinking how terrible you are being mindful, recognize that the awareness of that is the very practice of mindfulness, it's the very thing that you're trying to cultivate. So celebrate yourself. That's it.
That's the task. And we're all inundated by all of these different distractions. So it's hardly a fault of our own. It's just the culture that we're in, the world that we're in these days, but we can wake up amid all of the chaos. And that's our practice.
So you're doing great. Continue to add this into your, your way of thinking about mindfulness and how you bring it into the world. And let's settle in for today's meditation practice. Thanks so much. And talk to you soon.
