Hi, and welcome to your Daily Mindfulness. Today we're going to talk about being openminded. And so when it comes to mindfulness, it's really actually more about unlearning, in a way, and being open to questioning what we think we already know, rather than becoming more certain of what we do know. In fact, it's often the case that the more we meditate, the more we realize that we don't know. And our mind becomes more open, curious, and humble.
So when we begin on the path of mindfulness, we may have certain beliefs, judgments, and viewpoints about the way things are. We might feel really certain of those viewpoints and really have a firm resolve that they're the truth. But then what often happens is as we practice mindfulness over time, we may begin to realize that actually these viewpoints, opinions and beliefs are simply stories we tell ourselves. And they're thoughts that pass through the mind. And when we look at them a little closer and question them, they often suddenly don't seem as certain and fixed as we thought them to be.
Then if we look even closer at the nature of thoughts themselves, they're very fleeting. They are mental events that arise in the mind and then pass. So in other words, the closer you look within, the less substance there is to what we thought was solid and fixed. And you know, the beauty of this is that the more we see the true nature of thoughts, the more they lose their grip on us. The more easily, in other words, we let them go.
Now, although this might sound a bit scary or uncomfortable, you know, not to feel much certainty, it's actually a really relieving thing. Well, there's a sense of inner freedom and lightness when we let go of our rigid mental positions. It's a sense of liberation, openness, and inner peace that emerges. So today, the invitation is to see if you can let go, Oh, a little of holding on so tightly to a particular opinion or belief, and instead being curious and open minded about all that's happening in the here and now and all that you don't yet know. So as always, thank you for your practice and your presence here with us.
And inviting you now to settle in for today's meditation.
