A New Way to Find Your Purpose

Hi, welcome back to your Daily Mindfulness. In today's session, we're going to talk about the idea of finding your purpose. One of the common things I hear from people is I can't figure out my life's purpose and there tends to be a lot of stress and tension around that. But what if you made being in this moment fully your purpose? Sometimes the pressure to have a singular life focus can thwart our ability to see that we're given an opportunity to live with purpose in every single moment. My personal opinion is that any sense of a life purpose is little more than a story we tell ourselves, even if it feels as though we've channeled this life purpose from some other source.

Still. To adopt that channeled purpose as your purpose requires believing it, reminding yourself of it and repeatedly claiming it as truth, which at its core, is a story. Nothing against stories. We all live our own stories and they're constantly evolving based on our experiences. But if you're having trouble figuring out yours or feeling like you haven't been gifted a life's purpose, I truly hope you can cut yourself some slack, because another story we could tell is that there is no greater purpose than living this moment to the best of our ability, to treat each conversation, each bite of food, each interaction as the thing we were put on earth to do and to do well.

And you could easily make this argument since everything that has ever happened to you and everything that has ever happened in the universe has put this moment in front of you exactly as it is. So why not treat this as your purpose? How do you want to live this moment? How do you want to respond to it? How do you want to learn from it? How do you want to treat it as your life's work? And who knows, perhaps living a life like this will one day give you a grand sense of purpose beyond this momentary experience. Great. But you still have to come back to this moment. It's the only one you have.

So thank you for your practice. I hope this gives you something to think about. And if you are feeling some stress around having a grand life purpose, I hope this creates a little bit more ease and inspiration for a new way to think about this. I'll talk to you soon.
