Hi, and welcome to your Daily Mindfulness. Today I'm going to talk about the concept of fierce kindness. So we might sometimes think of kindness and compassion as soft skills, but to truly apply these skills in the grittiness of everyday life actually requires a lot of courage, commitment and inner strength. Because to practice kindness each day means we also have to practice continuously letting go of our ways of being unkind. Right? So this might mean holding our tongue when we feel like speaking harsh words.
It might mean not retaliating when someone mistreats us. It might be pausing and breathing when we feel reactive to stop ourselves from lashing out. It might mean being patient when a part of us wants to hurry up somebody who's holding us up. Or perhaps letting go of thinking mostly just about ourselves and widening our circle of concern to include the wider world around us, our family, our community, and eventually even all beings. Being kind is not always easy to do, right.
It actually asks a lot of us. It takes quite an unwavering mind to continue over and over again to respond with kindness and awareness, but it's well worth the effort. Now researchers at Oxford, Oxford university recently did a matter analysis of hundreds of studies on the effects of kindness and concluded that acts of kindness increase our own happiness and our own overall sense of life satisfaction. So this week ahead, I invite you to practice where you can, this kind of fierce kindness, knowing that each time you do, you're cultivating happiness and peace, both within yourself and in the world, all around you. So I'm going to close today with a quote by the Sixth Zen patriarch.
And this is my favorite quote, actually, because it's one that sums up beautifully, everything really, that I've learned on the path of mindfulness so far. So he says, "Do not say that kindness and awareness are separate. Awareness is the foundation of kindness. Kindness is the expression of awareness."
